ARTISTS DESCRIPTION (as told to her by her Father- Churchill Cann) This is right in the middle of new and old Texas Downs Station homesteads. It is rich blacksoil grazing country- with mountains all around. Limestone country to the southeast and northwest- and a tributary of the big Ord River called Spring Creek runs right through this place with lots of little creeks running into it. There are two large round rocks which are easily seen way down to the south of Red Butte and the stockmen used them as landmarks when they were mustering cattle. The Ngarrangkarni (Dreaming) story is that the rocks represent a man and woman who had been through Law (young people)- and travelled to this part of the country. They were husband and wife- and even though they were from Alice Downs way- they liked this place and decided to stay for a good while. They raised their children around these parts and after the children left- the man and woman stayed a bit longer and made the Law for this land. The rocks tell the story

Artwork Description Churchill has depicted one of the five major Bores on Texas Downs Station. The central oval shape is the large water tank- with two dams either side. The windmill is painted below these figures. He explained that the windmill pumped water from the bore up to the dams- thence to the holding tank- which drip-fed down to pipes running to water troughs around the area for the cattle. In the event of little wind- the bore was equipped with a diesel motor which he said “had to be cranked up to get everything happening again”. The artwork forms part of a limited series of the artist’s impression of mustering cattle on the Station- with focus on the relentless heat and all-encompassing red dust of the Kimberley Artwork is accompanied by a full suite of working images. _______________ ARTIST PROFILE Churchill Cann Churchill (Yoonany) was born on Texas Downs Station in 1947- where his father was a stockman and his mother worked in the station homestead.
