ARTWORK DESCRIPTION Phyllis has painted a version of the Daiwal (Barramundi) scales that are an important part of the Kitja Women’s Culture. The Elder women often paint this design in ochre on the top half of their bodies for dancing- cultural meetings and ceremonies (see picture below). The Barramundi Dreaming sites are secret places where the Kitja Women meet to discuss the Law- initiate the young women and pass their culture to the young ones. One of the favourite Ngarrangkarni (Dreamtime) stories is told by the women that long time ago- the women were fishing for Barramundi with woven nets. One escaped from the net and sailed right over the Kitja land- dropping its scales to make the diamonds in the area. It is believed the Tradition of the Barramundi Dreaming is far deeper than this story. Daiwal (Barramundi) Dreaming has been painted in various ways by most of the Kitja ochre artists- including the late Queenie McKenzie. _________________ _ ARTIST PROFILE Phyllis Thomas Phyllis was born at Turne Less

She accompanied him to Springvale- then Mabel Downs. Joe worked at Bow River alongside the late Timmy Timms for Sam and Maggie Lilly- and much later when the Government granted the station to the Timms Family- Joe was granted an excision- and developed Rugan Community (Crocodile Hole). ARTIST’S DESCRIPTION OF ARTWORK Mistake Creek is the last good water going south before you get to Warmun- near number four bore. Because the river flows all year round- and the big sink hole is deep with good fresh water- the stockman would take the cattle from the Stations all around this area (Bow River- Lissadell- Texas Downs- Violet Valley)- settle them down for the drovers to come and take them to the Wyndham meatworks or down the Canning Stock Route. This place was used by the very early white fellas to fatten up their cattle. You can see the good grazing land around the river and the waterhole. The old people tell me there were some bad things that went on around this place between the blackfella’s and the white men a long time ago. I don’t paint that. Just paint my country here where I go camping and fishing. _________________ _________________ _____ ARTIST PROFILE Phyllis Thomas Phyllis was born at Turner River (Kartang Rija) and grew up there. ARTISTS PROFILE Madigan Thomas Madigan is the epitome of a strong Kitja Law woman. Born on Violet Valley Station just south of Warmun- she has always been a worker. As a child- she assisted the women with yard and domestic duties around the station- and learnt from her elders the very depths of her culture which remain with her today. On moving to reside on Mabel Downs Station after Violet Valley became an outstation (her son Bruce has now converted Violet Valley (Baulah-Wah) back to a working cattle station)- she assisted her husband Sandy- who was a stockman. Madigan rode with the men- mustered the cattle and undoubtedly kept up with the best. ARTWORK DESCRIPTIONPhylli s has painted a version of the Daiwal (Barramundi) scales that are an important part of the Kitja Women’s Culture. _________________ _ ARTIST PROFILE Phyllis Thomas Phyllis was born at Turner R Less
