The Bottom Line: BLACK is a very satisfying game for FPS lovers.
I debated buying BLACK for PS2 for some time. I think the $39 sticker price was a little much for me. But, in May, a broke down and got it, and man was I happy I did. If you are a into FPS's, lots of noise, destruction and fun, this game if for you!!
BLACK puts you in the shoes of a covert CIA operative gone rouge. Your in essence battling against Chechnyian terrorist groups over 8 levels.
The first level is easy and just a taste of what is to come. EVERYTHING is destroyable. Environmental destruction, and 90 M16 magazines are what this game is about.
the game takes you through what seems to be Chechnya in search of a kingpin. Each level is big, complex and full of surprises. Expect to spend at least 1 hr on each board to beat it properly by obtaining all the objectives.
You will have a variety of weapons at your disposal...from the AK 47 (my favorite), to the tricked out M16, MP5, M249, Grenade launchers, shot guns, RPG units and a few other weapons.
No need to worry about ammo in this game, it's everywhere! expect to pump upwards of 5000 rounds out of an AK or M16 by the time each level is done. The assault weapons can be fitted with silencer which are found on a few boards. This adds to the fun by making you more stealth.
AI is VERY intelligent and difficult to bring down. They are covered head to toe in body armor and will take 5-15 rounds point blank to be dropped. One shot one kill only works with head shots. The enemies wielding shot guns are the hardest to drop unless u have a 357, RPG, grenade of a shot gun yourself. the automatics will take them down, but not until you spent 30-60 rounds on them and even after that, the chances of you being alive are slim.
there are health packs and healing kits on each level, but it depends on your difficulty level.
The game is ridiculously hard and checkpoints are few and far between. Even with this, the game is rewarding as when you put the controller down after 8 hours, you feel like you released a weeks worth of stress.
...Sound effects are incredible and even more so with a high power surround sound on. Graphics are good, the environments are nicely made, but when it hits the fan, the game can slow a little bit.
