super fast & super sharp lens
Date of Review: Sep 15, 2009
The Bottom Line: this is a superb lens, it will give outstanding results for years and for the serious photographer should be considered a stellar investment.
This lens, Nikon AF-S 24-70 f2.8, is my workhorse for the majority of my wedding & portrait photography. It however is a thoroughbred performer! It's outstanding speed of focus, super sharp images and ability to work on both full frame & DX Nikon DSLR bodies means I'll benefit from it's performance for years even with newer camera bodies.
I traded up to this lens, from the 17-55 f2.8 Nikon lens, to benefit from it's greater focal length 50-70mm. This is where I want to do the majority of my portrait work as it keeps facial features in perspective and without distortion. The extra focal range, especially
on a DX DSLR means i'm not in the face of the bride & groom which leads to a more relaxed and natural expression.
Key features that decided me upon the lens were: speed of focus - it's ability, in available light, to produce sharp images and 24-70 focal length at f2.8 across the range.
For both wedding and portrait work the ability to work at f2.8 means I can blur out the background (bokeh) to isolate the subject in the frame, which can give very pleasing results.
Nothing is perfect and I have only two issues with the lens: weight & cost. It's worth every penny! but every penny has to be earned to buy it. That is a lot of work! After a long days shooting you know you've being wearing it. The upside to the two downsides is you know you'll have great images!
