Nintendo Does it Again...

Date of Review: Feb 19, 2008

The Bottom Line:  For $129 you can have the time of your life, beam games to friends, and work on your health. Why wouldn't you buy this??
Today's review is also a round trip ticket to one of the most colorful worlds that exists today. Welcome everybody to the wonderful world of Nintendo!

Since the beginning of gaming this company has been the leader. And in the true spirit of the company, the Nintendo DS is a major hit!

When the Nintendo DS first arrived on the scene very few people took notice. It had two screens which was cool, but it was hard to fathom using a stylus for game play. So we held on to our Game Boy SP's tighter than ever.

With the DS Lite, we caved. It was thin, not bulky like the original DS, and just looked so darn pretty! It doesn't hurt that this system supports play of the old game boy games as well as allows you the ability to play all of the new titles that are constantly being released.

For those of you who don't know, DS stands for Dual Screen. Yes my friends, I said it once, and I'll say it again. TWO SCREENS! The top part is where the video action is the bottom part is a touch screen. As with all DS, and DS lites, it responds to a stylus cleverly hidden on the bottom of the system. (Which is great for those of us too scatterbrained to keep up with this little digital pen!)

If you find that the system is not responding to your stylus they have even included a touch screen configuration menu that anyone can do themselves to recalibrate the touch screen, (which will ultimately save you a lot of hassle and a lot of money to pay someone else to do it for you!)

The DS also has a built in microphone which is great for games like Nintendogs that responds to voice commands!

This beautiful yet pocket sized contraption also comes with a built in wireless adapter for jumping on wi-fi and battling kids in Japan or wherever they may be. Unlike it's competitive counterparts though, Nintendo charges NOTHING for the wi-fi experience!

There has already even been a game that came out for the Wii (my next review), which uses the wireless chip to communicate with the DS. (Pokemon Battle Revolution) and of course Nintendo promises to do much more in the future.

If you and your kids or you and a friend both have a DS many games feature some form of share mode where you need to only have one disc to play against one another in a 2 player duel. The game stays active on your system long after your friend has gone home for dinner as long as you don't shut off the system.

There is even a DS web browser for those who may not be able to afford a computer of their own but are in the vicinity of a wireless connection (like at a Starbucks or McDonalds)

This system isn't just for kids either! With games like Brain Age and Flash Focus for the DS Lite, Nintendo is ahead of the game literally in developing games for adults. It is a proven fact that "training your brain in minutes a day" will help keep your brain healthy and sharp and could actually lower your risk of Alzheimer's!

From 6-60 more and more people are jumping on board with this system!

At $129.00 this is a great price for the system! One thing about the company that I like is when their systems come out the price is usually reasonable and holds steady for a few years unlike the counterparts who aim high and land low. In other words they release a system for $600 and a month or two later they drop the price $100 or more. If you see the Nintendo logo you can rest assured that the quality is there to back up whatever price tag goes along with it!

My #1 recommendation though is to stock up on screen protectors! There's nothing like having this amazing system and not being able to see the screen! All that fast action game play and tapping with games like Elite Beat can kill anyones screen!

Pros
Bill Gates has NOTHING on Miyamoto
Cons
The only issue I have is that there is very little memory on this system.
