The Bottom Line: If you like football and 60 hour RPG's, skip. If you like fast, fun games while 'sitting in the bathroom', it's perfect.
When the Nintendo DS first came out, I was very skeptical. There were very few launch titles that were worth playing and with the failure of the Gamecube still fresh in my mind, I thought I would never own a DS. However, after a year and a half, the library has grown to include at least a dozen quality titles.
The DS Lite, which is a scaled down version of the original 'DS Fat', is a much better piece of hardware than its predecessor. It's smaller, feels more sturdy, and has a brighter screen. Battery life seems to be about the same.
My only problem with the DS is the same problem I had with my Palm Pilot. I'm very wary of scratching the touch screen. And from what I've seen, screen protector solutions seem limited in American retail stores. The screen picks up any finger oil that gets near it, so I have to clean it at least once a day. Also, there are little to no quality sports or racing titles for the DS.
Bottom line, the Nintendo DS is a relatively inexpensive piece of gaming hardware for the '20 minutes at a time' gamer with a full time job and/or family.
