Sony SR1 review and compared to Sony HC3
Date of Review: Jun 28, 2007
The Bottom Line: try it , know about the compression and if you like it then get it. I didn't like compression. be careful! get the hc3 instead
This is sort of like two or three reviews in one (hc3 and Sr1 and UX1). I wrote a long review and decided to change it .... basically they are good if not very good basic hd camcorders. The only thing that is different is the type of compression and media they use. Ulitmately probably then the hc3 is the better choice because of the early compression used on the sr1 and ux1 which sort of puts a slightly jerky viewing experience that some might see and others might not. Other then that, for the price many of these command in 2008 , they are in bargain territory. I would probably want to get a high def model than an older good digital camcorder. If I had to be critical in one area is the lack of color but many people wouldn't notice that unless they compared them to the 2008 models with more pixels. For ease of use I would definitely give the nod to the SR1 , then the HC3 and finally the DVD UX1. The ease in which the sr1 connects to your computer to download and play the video is very cool and simple although without doing it , it might seem complicated at first... it really though is not. The HC-3 uses mini tape which is easy enough but is definitely not as inviting as using a harddrive . The UX1 which took surprisingly good video also is a bit more challenging to use and its been my experience people don't want to hassle with its bulky and clunky experiences with saving the video after you already recorded it..
